Ive been looking for some cool software to install and Ive came across AppCleaner that is supposed to remove all related files at the same time you remove an app.

I tried it on some apps like Chrome and it seemed to work quietly well But I dont know anything about OS X.

Unless you feel like sleuthing out every single file an application stores information in, AppCleaner is practically necessary.

I was wondering if AppCleaner could do a big mistake and make me remove a necessary file of the OS Continue this thread level 1 8 points 6 years ago These cleaner apps are fine, Mac OS X keeps installation receipts for any applications which are installed via packages (the Installer application.) This is pretty much any app that isnt a drag-and-drop installation.

These cleaner applications take advantage of the receipts to hunt down the locations for any files which arent located in the Applications (or Applications) folder.

There is no risk in using these apps, they arent doing wildcard searches or anything similarly risky.

Plus those extra files are tiny in todays world where space is so plentiful and cheap (even on a 128gb Macbook, several files that weigh a few kb dont take up much room at all).

Appcleaner is harmless and not a bad idea, BUT you could also do what I do and.just not care.

The Mackeeper type apps all have a smart uninstaller that will so this, and will often detect when you delete an app and ask if you want to remove the extra files.
